NEW GERMANY RURAL HIGH SCHOOL

SUBSTANCE USE POLICY 

It shall be the policy of New Germany Rural High School to prohibit the use, possession, or sale of restricted substances on the school property.  This includes any extra curricular activity held off the school property. 

The Substance Use Policy refers to the use of a restricted substance, other than food, that affects the way the mind or body functions.  Restricted substances include tobacco, alcohol, illegal and legal drugs.  This includes, but is not exclusive to, non-prescription use of prescription drugs, inhalants and magic mushrooms. 

Disciplinary procedures regarding alcohol, illegal drugs, non-prescription use of prescription drugs and non-medical use of legal drugs. 

Procedure 

Students who are found to be in possession/or believed to have consumed a restricted substance shall face the following consequences:

First Offense 

  1. The student shall serve a five-day out of school suspension. 
  2. The student shall receive an extra-curricular ban for the remainder of the school year.  The extra-curricular ban shall be reviewed, upon request of the student, following a three-month probationary period.
  3. A risk assessment referral is to be made to Addiction Services.
  4. Students are to be provided with learning activity packages to be completed during their suspension.

 

Second Offenses 

  1. The student shall be suspended from school for five days with a recommendation for suspension for the remainder of the school year and an extra-curricular ban for the remainder of the school year.
  2. A risk assessment referral is to be made to Addiction Services.
  3. Students are to be provided with learning activity packages to be completed during their suspension.

 

Distribution of a Restricted Substance

Students who are found to be in possession of a restricted substance for the purpose of distribution shall be suspended from the school for five days and prohibited from participation in extra-curricular activities for the rest of the school year.  A recommendation is to be made for the suspension to be extended for the remainder of the school year.

Discipline procedures for students which involves tobacco products 

Students who are found to be in possession of tobacco products or believed to have consumed tobacco products on school property or during any school function shall face the following consequences:

 

First offense 

  1. The school official will confiscate the tobacco products.
  2. The student shall be suspended from school for a one-day period.
  3. Students are to be provided with learning activity packages to be completed during the suspension.
  4. In all cases, parents/guardians are to be informed by letter and by phone if possible.

 

Second Offense

  1. The school official will confiscate the tobacco products.
  2. The student shall be suspended from school for a three-day period.

 

Third Offense 

  1. The school official will confiscate the tobacco products.
  2. The student shall be suspended from school for a five-day period.
  3. The student is to be referred to Addiction Services

 

Distribution of Tobacco

Students who are found to be in possession of a tobacco product for the purpose of distribution shall be suspended from school for up to five days.

 

Subsequent Offenses

If a student is repeatedly in violation of the Substance Use Policy, the school official may make a recommendation for the suspension to be extended for the remainder of the school year.
